RSU 74 – Serving Anson, Embden, New Portland, and Solon, Maine Location: Central Maine – Where the Carrabassett River Meets the Kennebec River Position Type: Full-Time, Year-Round Salary: Commensurate with Experience and Qualifications Reports to: Superintendent of Schools

About the Role

RSU 74 is seeking a compassionate, experienced, and collaborative Special Education Director to lead special education programming across our rural school district. Approximately 23% of our students receive special education services, and many families face economic challenges—making this role essential in ensuring equity, inclusion, and support for all learners.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and vision for PK–12 special education programs
• Supervise and support special education teachers, Ed Techs, and service providers
• Ensure compliance with IDEA, MUSER
• Oversee the development of IEPs
• Foster inclusive practices and strong school-family partnerships
• Manage the special education budget and IDEA grant reporting
• Plan and deliver professional development to SPED staff

Required Qualifications

• Maine DOE Certification as Special Education Director (030) or eligible
• Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or related field
• Minimum 5 years of experience in special education
• Strong knowledge of special education law and procedures
• Proven ability to collaborate in small, resource-conscious communities

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in rural or high-poverty districts
• Training in trauma-informed practices and positive behavioral supports
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
