About the Role:

We are seeking a Lab Assistant to support high school students conducting life science experiments in a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory as part of a structured research program. This role is ideal for a graduate student or an individual with a completed graduate degree in life sciences who is experienced in laboratory safety protocols and passionate about mentoring young researchers.

Students will conduct experiments such as RNA extraction, DNA extraction, and genetic analysis, with a difficulty level comparable to first- and second-year undergraduate coursework. The Lab Assistant will provide guidance to ensure students understand core techniques while maintaining strict biosafety standards.

Responsibilities:

• Supervise and assist high school students in conducting experiments in a BSL-2 laboratory environment, ensuring compliance with biosafety regulations and protocols.
• Train students on the proper use of BSL-2 lab equipment, aseptic techniques, and biohazard handling.
• Guide students through molecular biology experiments, including RNA extraction, DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis.
• Ensure adherence to all lab safety guidelines, including proper PPE use and disposal of biological materials.
• Monitor lab activities to prevent contamination, maintain sterile conditions, and handle potential biohazard risks.
• Assist in lab maintenance, inventory management, and equipment sterilization.

Qualifications:

• Graduate student or holder of a graduate degree in life sciences (e.g., microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology, biomedical sciences), preferably at MIT or Harvard.
• Experience working in a laboratory setting with knowledge of biosafety procedures and risk assessments.
• Strong communication and mentoring skills, especially when working with high school students.
• Ability to enforce BSL-2 compliance, ensuring all work is conducted in accordance with biosafety guidelines.
• Located in or able to commute to the Boston area. You will be available during one of the following periods in 2025: April 13–18, June 15–24 and 27, or August 13–22.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior experience in teaching, tutoring, or mentoring students in a lab or research setting.
• Knowledge of waste disposal protocols and decontamination procedures.

Compensation & Schedule:

• Competitive hourly rate with a transportation allowance.
• Part-time position with flexible hours based on lab session schedules.
