Overview The American Meteorological Society (AMS) Policy Program seeks candidates from the Earth sciences and related fields for a science-policy postdoctoral fellowship. Postdoctoral fellows in science-policy have the opportunity to explore the policy dimensions of their scientific field, develop expertise in new areas at the science-policy interface, help initiate novel activities within the AMS Policy Program, and contribute to ongoing activities. Specific opportunities, roles, and responsibilities vary based on the interests and backgrounds of each fellow but will likely include contributing to Policy Program studies and analysis. All applicants should consider carefully and convey their particular areas of interest in science-policy. The AMS advances the atmospheric and related sciences and their professional application. Founded in 1919, AMS has a large membership and publishes journals, sponsors conferences, and offers programs and services. The AMS Policy Program promotes informed decision-making through analysis, communication, problem solving, and research to help policy-makers and scientists understand one another. Position Details This is a full-time at-will position, located in our Washington D.C. office. Postdoctoral fellows in science-policy must be eligible for employment in the United States and complete all requirements for their Ph.D. prior to the start of their fellowship. Postdoctoral appointments are for one year and will begin between April 1, 2017 and September 1, 2017. The salary for this position is $50,000 per year. This position includes health insurance and other benefits, and a limited budget for travel or professional development. Responsibilities and Activities Contribute to Policy Program studies and analysis. Explore the policy dimensions of the fellow’s scientific field and develop expertise at the science-policy interface. Help initiate novel activities within the AMS Policy Program. Communicate and coordinate with policy-makers and scientists to promote understanding and collaboration. Qualifications and Eligibility Eligibility for employment in the United States and completion of all Ph.D. requirements prior to the start of the fellowship. Strong background in Earth sciences or related fields with interest in policy. Ability to convey areas of interest in science-policy and to engage in policy-relevant activities.
