The role of the Pathology Navigator performs operational support functions and manages workflow, to include but not limited to, the responsibilities and tasks listed in Position Responsibilities. The role is under the oversight of the Transfusion Medicine Supervisor. This critical role represents the Department of Pathology both intradepartmental and external to BILH-Mount Auburn Hospital clients and patients. Responsibilities include processing internal Pathologists consult requests to outside pathology departments, obtaining specimens, coordinating testing kits and reference labs, completing requisitions and billing, packaging and mailing to laboratories, amending patient electronic records, opening incoming patient Cytology and Surgical consult material, preparing slides for clinical medical conferences, determining appropriate CPT/ICD10 codes and charges, processing add-on testing for Immuno-Histochemistry and Molecular Pathology, liaising with physicians on ordering and coordinating send out reference testing, managing addendums and scans for pathology reports, identifying and resolving problems affecting test performance, answering incoming calls and responding to requests, managing fax transmissions, maintaining hospital standards and compliance, maintaining supplies, following safety procedures, participating in quality improvement activities, and performing other duties as required. Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include excellent communication skills, medical terminology, typing and computer skills, and teamwork. Minimum education required is a High School Diploma, with an Associate Degree preferred. Medical secretarial training or laboratory experience is preferred but training will be provided. No licensure or certification is required. Working conditions include exposure to infectious diseases and chemicals, prolonged standing and walking, repetitive data entry, and use of protective equipment. The hospital requires all staff to be vaccinated against influenza and COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
