Job Title: Mortgage Underwriter

Job Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented Mortgage Underwriter to assess mortgage applications, ensuring compliance with industry guidelines and risk standards. This contract position is available for candidates based in Tempe, AZ, or Ewing, NJ, following a hybrid work schedule after training (3 days onsite, 2 days remote). The ideal candidate will analyze financial documents, evaluate risk factors, and make sound underwriting decisions.

Compensation:

• $27 - $30+/hour, based on experience and qualifications.

Work Schedule:

• Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM or 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
• Hybrid schedule after training (3 days onsite, 2 days remote).

Key Responsibilities of the Mortgage Underwriter:

• Review and analyze mortgage loan applications to assess creditworthiness and risk.
• Ensure compliance with investor, insurer, and regulatory guidelines.
• Evaluate borrower financials, including income, assets, credit history, and property appraisals.
• Make underwriting decisions and provide conditional approvals or denials based on findings.
• Communicate effectively with loan officers, processors, and other stakeholders to resolve outstanding conditions.
• Document underwriting decisions accurately and maintain thorough records.
• Stay up to date with industry regulations and underwriting best practices.

Qualifications and Skills for the Mortgage Underwriter:

• High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
• 2+ years of underwriting experience in mortgage lending.
• Strong knowledge of mortgage guidelines, including FHA, VA, and conventional loans.
• Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency in mortgage underwriting software and Microsoft Office applications.
