The Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) Sonographer is a highly skilled professional who specializes in high-risk obstetric ultrasounds, focusing on the fetal anatomical development and maternal well-being. Utilizes high frequency sound waves along with color Doppler Ultrasound to capture images of abnormalities that assist in accurate diagnostic interpretation. The MFM sonographer’s knowledge of ultrasound equipment, structured reporting, and image management is crucial for accurate diagnoses and optimal patient care. The MFM Sonographer can also perform routine obstetrical and gynecological ultrasounds.
Responsibilities:Performs advanced ultrasounds for high-risk pregnancies, including detailed fetal anatomy assessments for anomalies in adherence with AIUM level 2 detailed guidelines and department maternal-fetal medicine physician requirements. Have an in-depth understanding of fetal anatomy and development, enabling precise assessments and identification of abnormalities.
Conducts comprehensive Doppler studies to evaluate fetal blood flow, placental circulation, and assess conditions such as fetal growth restrictions, anemia or anomalies. Assists with complex invasive procedures, for example, amniocentesis, amnioreduction and chorionic villi sampling (CVS) in collaboration with maternal-fetal medicine physician. Monitors fetal growth through serial ultrasounds, providing critical data for high-risk management and interventions including assessment of all prenatal records for accuracy of diagnoses and dating of pregnancy. Utilizes excellent communication skills and compassion to provide patients with support and guidance regarding prenatal course for both maternal and fetal diagnoses. Document and report findings thoroughly for ongoing medical evaluation and management between multidisciplinary teams. If scheduled at the Women’s & Children’s Center, additional ultrasound skills can include evaluation of first trimester emergencies, abdominal ultrasound and pediatric ultrasounds. Completes all exams and documentation consistently in Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), and the Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) reporting system to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, support quality assurance, and facilitate accurate retrieval and interpretation of patient records. Identifies and records all charges associated with exams, proactively addressing errors and resolving issues related to the final product sent to PACS to promote financial integrity and billing accuracy Qualifications: EDUCATION:
Required: Associates Degree OR Bachelor’s Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography from a school that is accredited by CAAHEP
EXPERIENCE:
Required: 0-1 year of ultrasound clinical experience
