Job Description
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides the teaching and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in the home as dictated by the Individual Support Plan (ISP). This position provides the direct hands-on care to ensure the safety, health, welfare and satisfaction of the individuals served.
Duties and responsibilities:
• Supports individuals as dictated by the Plan of Support including but not limited to direct assistance and teaching in personal care, domestic tasks, community living, recreational activities, problem solving, financial independence.
• Transports and directly support individuals with appointments and activities.
• Completes all required documentation as required by the program and any applicable licensing or accrediting bodies.
• Ensures the home and vehicles are clean and well maintained.
Reports and maintenance, health or safety concerns immediately • Monitors the health and general wellbeing of the individuals served including possible side effects of medication. Assists with the administration of medication when required.
• Compete criminal background check.
• Maintains all certifications as required by the program Completes all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
• High School diploma or equivalent
• 1-year previous experience working with adults with a developmental disability
• Maintain valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
• Meet licensing criteria for criminal history.
• Complete Medicaid Waiver training and Medication Administration certification if required.
• Maintain current CPR and First Aid certification
• Demonstrated knowledge of characteristics and concepts of developmental disabilities
• Ability to implement and follow policies and procedures
• Ability to engage in the support and teaching of people with disabilities.
• Ability to provide basic personal care and hygiene support.
• Ability to participate with professional staff in design and implementation of teaching and programmatic activities
• Ability to observe the rights and dignity of others.
• Ability to record ad report other's behavior, attitude and physical condition.
• Ability to teach others to perform tasks of daily living.
• Ability to perform simple math.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to write reports with a minimum of grammatical or factual errors.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others Working conditions: Work may include evening, weekend and/or overnight shifts. Employees may be required to remain on site or evacuate during an emergency. Employees may be subject to aggressive or hostile conditions.
Physical requirements: Ability to push a wheelchair, support others on and off vans, assistance with physically helping others transfer from a sitting to lying or standing position.
