About This Role

We're seeking a stellar freelance technical writer with a background and strong knowledge of data infrastructure and engineering workflows. You'll help communicate our client's vision of "shift-left data quality" ensuring developers and data teams work seamlessly together by catching data issues early in the software development lifecycle.

Responsibilities

1. Translate complex concepts like data contracts, schema evolution, static analysis, and CI/CD integration into digestible, actionable content for software engineers and data teams.
2. Create blog posts and thought-leadership content demonstrating how the platform improves data quality, reliability, and collaboration.
3. Develop content that bridges the gap between developer and data practitioner audiences (e.g., data engineers, DevOps, platform teams, analytics leaders).
4. Adhere closely to the client's brand voice and messaging guidelines while making content engaging, authoritative, and community-friendly.
5. Write for developer-oriented channels (e.g., blog, Substack-style newsletter, GitHub-adjacent content, technical guides).
6. Stay current on emerging developer tools, data infrastructure trends, and "shift-left" practices in quality, governance, and observability.
7. Collaborate with SMEs, engineers, and client stakeholders to capture technical accuracy and product nuance.
8. Ensure all content meets high editorial standards for clarity, accuracy, and credibility.
9. Suggest optimizations for improving content performance (SEO, readability, developer engagement).
10. Manage multiple projects and deadlines, delivering consistent quality at scale.
11. Conduct thorough research to understand client products, target audiences, and industry context, ensuring content is in-depth and insightful.
12. Use our internal briefs to structure and outline articles clearly and effectively. While our briefs provide direction, you'll bring clarity, logic, and structure to each piece.
13. Incorporate keywords and SEO best practices without compromising readability or quality, balancing search optimization with a natural, audience-first writing style.
14. Cite credible sources, stats, and examples to support arguments and enhance credibility.
15. Adapt your writing style to match the voice and tone of different client brands, ensuring that the content feels authentic and aligns with brand messaging.
16. Work closely with editors to revise and refine content based on feedback. You're open to collaboration and committed to continuous improvement.
17. Consistently meet deadlines and communicate proactively with the editorial lead regarding progress, questions, or blockers.

Who You Are

• 3+ years of experience in a developer-facing role such as DevRel, developer advocacy, software engineering, or data engineering. You can use this hands-on experience to inform your writing.
• 2+ years of technical writing experience. You know how to explain concepts like CI/CD integration, schema validation, data observability, or contract-driven development to both technical and business readers.
• Strong understanding of developer workflows (Git, testing, code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, observability tools).
• Familiarity with data engineering challenges (schema drift, data lineage, pipeline breakage, data quality testing).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; you can make technical content engaging and accessible without losing depth.
• Experience writing for developer audiences through blogs, documentation, tutorials, or newsletters (e.g., Substack, personal blogs, or open-source documentation).
• Comfort interviewing engineers and SMEs to create content that reflects real-world developer and data team challenges.
• SEO knowledge: able to search-optimize content while prioritizing developer trust and content quality.
• Strong time management and organizational skills; you always meet deadlines or communicate proactively if not.
• Positive, collaborative mindset: you're curious, open to feedback, and motivated to craft high-quality technical content.

Portfolio Requirement

A recent portfolio of developer-oriented technical writing is required. Please submit 35 sample articles, tutorials, or newsletters that showcase your ability to communicate technical concepts to developer audiences. Open-source documentation or community blog contributions are also welcome.
