Duties Summary


Initiates contacts with the elderly and other designated target groups and provides information on available community and governmental resources; assesses the needs of program participants and assists participants in obtaining needed social, health, and recreational services; provides transportation, in-home, and other support services; and performs other related duties as required.

There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Elderly Activities Division in Kailua-Kona.

The eligible list may used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples of Duties


  • Locates, interviews, and surveys target group individuals.
  • Assesses information collected in interviews and provided on survey/assessment forms and determines the need for referrals.
  • Refers participants to appropriate government or community agency providing required services.
  • Assists participants in obtaining services by aiding in the completion of application forms and following through on the application process.
  • May serve as an interpreter or translator.
  • Follows up to ascertain that referrals made were appropriate and met participant's needs and requirements.
  • Receives and disseminates information of interest to participants.
  • Makes regular friendly visitations and reassurance telephone calls.
  • Provides in-home transportation and escort services to post office, banks, markets, resource agencies, nutrition centers, and health agencies.
  • Picks up and delivers mail, supplies, groceries, and prescription for participants.
  • Sets up and maintains individual case records.
  • May assist higher level workers in the more complex cases.
  • Prepares routine correspondence and reports as required.
  • Posts data to various control records or statements.
  • Assembles information from different sources for compiling reports.
  • Gives information over the counter or by telephone regarding program regulations, policies, and standards.
  • Maintains files and indexes.
  • May serve as a trainee Site Manager.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
  • graduation from high school, and
  • one (1) year of experience which shall have involved meeting and dealing with people, and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at the time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at the time of hire.)
Note: Possession of a current American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification or other current equivalent certificates prior to completion of probation.

Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.
