Location: Ohio History Connection, Columbus, OH

Status: Full Time, permanent

Salary: $41,600 - $47,840 per year

About Ohio History Connection:

Ohio History Connection is a statewide history organization with the mission to spark discovery of Ohio's stories. Chartered in 1885, the OHC carries out history services for Ohio and its citizens focused on preserving and sharing the state's history. This includes housing the state historic preservation office, the official state archives, local history office and managing more than 50 sites and museums across Ohio.

Position Summary:

The Community Engagement Coordinator, through holistic community relationship building and the strategic coordination of organizational resources, advances the Ohio History Connection's commitment to the collective health and well-being of Ohio's communities. The Community Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for strengthening existing partnerships and building new relationships, especially with residents of the Linden, Weinland Park, and Near East Side neighborhoods. Utilizing Asset-Based Community Development, collective impact, restorative history, human-centered design, trauma-informed care and other classical community organizing tenants, the Community Engagement Coordinator will build trust with historically excluded communities to fulfill the mission, core values and strategic plan of the Ohio History Connection.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Direct Engagement:

  • Engage communities with emphasis on enhancing current relationships and building new relationships that connect established and new partners to existing Ohio History Connection programs and products to meet four goals:
    • Mobilize Ohio History Connection as an effective and leading contributor to the collective health and wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities.
    • Fulfill the potential of existing Ohio History Connection's programs and products.
    • Inform the direction and evolution of the Ohio History Connection's programs and products to ensure they continually meet community needs.
    • Model our organization's core values through our community engagement services and activities.
  • Act as primary liaison to the neighborhoods of Linden, Weinland Park, and the Near East Side by developing and maintaining relationships with near-neighbor's and near-neighborhood organizations.
  • Participate in community-based or Ohio History Connection outreach events/programs, utilizing personal or public transportation resources.
  • Directly support the ongoing design and implementation of the Columbus Museums for All Hub and related programs, including the Ohio History Connection-specific Spark Membership.
  • Collect and share community feedback with Ohio History Connection staff to better meet and understand community needs.
  • Advance community engagement programs and services that empower community members as partners, advocates, and leaders in the Ohio History Connection's mission, goals, and strategic plan.
  • Serve as a point-person for Community Engagement-related external information requests, which come from multiple communication channels.

Sustainability & Administration:

  • Innovate how the Ohio History Connection collects and shares the past of Ohioans and their communities, especially historically excluded geographic areas.
  • Manage and track a budget.
  • Prepare grant and sponsorship proposals and other requests for program and/or planning funding.
  • Contribute to fundraising research and relationship stewardship.
  • Manage ongoing program evaluation and contribute to reporting.
  • Collaborate with Marketing team to develop and implement ongoing awareness building, recruitment, and narrative building.

Alignment & Efficiency:

  • Foster and strengthen intra-organizational relationships to ensure maximized resource coordination, scope of community engagement, and organizational program alignment, with special focus on the Community Engagement Department's restorative history and local history capacity building efforts.
  • Promote and support established department services including but not limited to Historical Markers and the Gay Ohio History Initiative (GOHI), Immigrant and Refugee efforts, Community Engagement initiatives, and statewide partners such as the Ohio Local History Alliance.
  • Coordinate closely with, and understand fully, the Ohio History Connection's outreach services to inform relationships with current and new partners.

Education and Experience:

Associate's degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field PLUS three to five years relevant working experience OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field PLUS one to three years relevant working experience.
