The primary responsibilities include prosecuting referrals from the Fraud, Investigation and Recovery Unit of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) related to fraud involving TANF, Food Stamps, ASPIRE, and other benefits. The attorney will also provide legal advice and collaborate with DHHS investigators to develop welfare fraud cases across the state. Once a case is referred, the attorney will review and determine whether to bring criminal charges. The position involves criminal prosecutions in the Unified Criminal Docket and appellate cases before the Law Court. Candidates should have a strong interest in litigation, with trial experience and skills being advantageous. Essential qualities include high ethical standards, sound judgment, effective communication, interpersonal skills, and good organizational and time management abilities. Applicants must be members of the Maine Bar in good standing. Minimum Qualifications This is not an entry-level position. Applicants must be Maine Bar members in good standing, detail-oriented, interested in complex regulations, possess strong legal advocacy and writing skills, and be effective team players. One to three years of criminal law experience is preferred.
